As cities grow, planners must decide where new residents will live. One option is to build upward, with tall apartment buildings close to the city center. Another option is to build outward, adding neighborhoods of single-family houses on land at the edge of the city. Each approach has supporters. Which do you think is the better way for a growing city to provide housing: building tall apartment buildings in the center or expanding into the suburbs? Explain why.
Building upward makes more sense. When people live close together, they can walk or take public transportation to work, shops, and schools. Spreading the city outward means destroying farmland and forests, and it forces everyone to drive long distances, which creates traffic and pollution.
I think the suburbs are the better choice. Many people, especially families, want a house with a garden and more space. Tall buildings in the center are often expensive and crowded, and children have nowhere to play. Cities should respect what residents actually want instead of forcing everyone into small apartments.
