The Language of Bees
animal behaviourWhen a honeybee finds a good source of food, she returns to the hive and performs a 'waggle dance' that tells other bees where to find it. The Austrian scientist Karl von Frisch, who the dance in the mid-twentieth century, showed that it contains surprisingly precise information. The bee runs in a straight line while shaking her body, then circles back and repeats the run. The of this run in relation to the vertical indicates the direction of the food relative to the sun, while the length of time the bee spends waggling to how far away the food is. Because the sun moves across the sky during the day, dancers must the angle to keep their directions accurate. Von Frisch's findings, were doubted by some researchers at first, earned him a share of the Nobel Prize in 1973.
